متن آموزش

هر فرهنگی قانون‌هایی دارد که هیچ‌کس جایی ننوشته‌شان. مهمان‌ها معمولاً وقتی یکی را زیر پا گذاشتند تازه متوجهش می‌شوند!

رسوم ایرانی، به زبان انگلیسی

  • It's customary to take off your shoes when you enter someone's home. — مرسوم است موقع ورود به خانه‌ی کسی کفش‌ها را دربیاوری.
  • Iranians are famous for their hospitality — guests are always offered tea, fruit and sweets.
  • Taarof is a tradition of polite refusal: a shopkeeper may say “it's not worth anything” but still expects you to pay. — تعارف: فروشنده می‌گوید «قابل نداره» ولی انتظار دارد پول را بدهید!
  • Many families keep old superstitions, like passing under the Quran before a journey or burning wild rue (esfand) against the evil eye. — رد شدن از زیر قرآن قبل از سفر و اسفند دود کردن برای چشم‌زخم.

tradition یا custom؟

tradition معمولاً قدیمی‌تر است و با تاریخ، خانواده یا مناسبت‌ها گره خورده: The haft-seen table is a Nowruz tradition. custom یک عادت رفتاری معمول است: Shaking hands is a common custom in business. خیلی وقت‌ها هر دو درست‌اند.

In the UK, it's rude to ask someone how much they earn. (در انگلیس پرسیدن درآمد کسی بی‌ادبی است.) / In many countries, it's frowned upon to be late for a business meeting.

سپردن سنت‌ها به نسل بعد

My grandmother passed down her recipes to my mother, and she passed them down to me. (مادربزرگم دستورپخت‌هایش را به مادرم سپرد و او هم به من.) / These songs are part of our cultural heritage.

درباره‌ی فرهنگتان بنویسید

فرض کنید یک دوست خارجی مهمان خانواده‌تان است. با عبارت‌های بالا پنج توصیه بنویسید: It's customary to…، It's polite to…، It's frowned upon to…

انتخاب کنید: 1) In Japan it's (customary / heritage) to bow. 2) Breaking a mirror brings bad luck — it's an old (superstition / etiquette). 3) Please don't ask about his divorce; it might (offend / pass down) him.
