یک شب در تئاتر

Last night I went to see a play at the City Theatre in Tehran. The cast was mostly young actors, but they were brilliant. The stage was almost empty — just a table and two chairs — but the script was so strong you didn't need more. During the interval everyone was talking about the main actress. At the end, the audience gave them a standing ovation that lasted five minutes.

audience: یک اسم جمعی

audience به یک گروه اشاره دارد: The audience was huge (در انگلیسی بریتانیایی were هم مجاز است). برای کسانی که در خانه تلویزیون تماشا می‌کنند viewers و برای ورزش spectators یا fans به کار می‌رود.

• Break a leg! — موفق باشی! (به اجراکننده‌ها گفته می‌شود؛ طبق یک باور قدیمی گفتن «good luck» بدشانسی می‌آورد!)
• steal the show — ستاره‌ی اصلی شدن، همه‌ی توجه‌ها را به خود جلب کردن
• behind the scenes — پشت پرده، دور از چشم مردم
• be in the spotlight — در کانون توجه بودن
