City centre to go car-free every Friday from next month

Cars will be banned from the historic centre of Mehrabad every Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., starting on 1 June, the city council announced yesterday. The decision aims to reduce air pollution and make the old town more attractive to visitors.

Only buses, taxis, emergency vehicles and residents with special permits will be allowed to enter the area. The council says it will add extra buses and open two new car parks just outside the centre.

“This is a historic day for our city,” said Mayor Leila Tavakoli. “Our children deserve to breathe clean air, and our beautiful old streets deserve to be enjoyed on foot.”

However, not everyone is happy. Some shop owners fear they will lose customers. “Most of my customers come by car,” said Behrouz Amini, who runs a carpet shop near the bazaar. “If they can't park, they'll go to the shopping mall instead.”

A similar scheme in another city reduced air pollution in the centre by about 20% in its first year, according to a university study. The council will review the plan after six months.
