The Silk Road

For more than 1,500 years, a network of routes known as the Silk Road connected China with the Mediterranean. Despite its name, it was not a single road, and silk was only one of many goods that travelled along it.

Merchants carried spices, glass, paper, horses and precious stones across deserts and mountains. Few of them made the whole journey. Instead, goods passed from trader to trader, city to city, often changing hands dozens of times before reaching their final buyer.

Persia sat right in the middle of this network, and cities such as Nishapur, Rey and Tabriz grew rich from trade. Travellers rested in caravanserais — roadside inns built around a large courtyard — where they could find food, water and shelter for their animals. Many of these buildings can still be visited in Iran today.

However, the most important things the Silk Road carried were not objects at all. Religions, languages, music, scientific knowledge and recipes also travelled these routes. Paper-making reached the Islamic world from China, and later spread to Europe. Musical instruments, games like chess, and new foods moved in every direction.

The routes declined after the 15th century, when sea travel became faster and safer. But the idea of the Silk Road — a world connected by curiosity and exchange — remains powerful today.
