Why is it so easy to check your phone fifty times a day, but so hard to go to the gym twice a week? The answer, psychologists say, lies in how our brains form habits.
Every habit follows a simple loop. First comes a cue — a trigger that tells the brain to start a behaviour. It might be a time of day, a place, a feeling or another action. Then comes the routine: the behaviour itself. Finally, there is a reward, which tells the brain the loop is worth remembering. Over time, the connection between cue and reward becomes so strong that the behaviour happens almost automatically.
Consider the phone. The cue might be boredom; the routine is unlocking the screen; the reward is a small hit of novelty — a new message, a funny video. Repeat this thousands of times, and reaching for the phone requires no decision at all.
The good news is that the same loop can build useful habits. Researchers suggest starting extremely small. Rather than promising to study English for an hour a day, commit to five minutes — and attach it to something you already do. “After I pour my morning tea, I will review five new words.” The existing habit becomes the cue.
Making the reward visible helps too. Some people mark each successful day on a calendar; a growing chain of marks becomes satisfying in itself.
How long does it take? A study at University College London found that forming a new habit took anywhere from 18 to 254 days, with an average of 66. The lesson: missing one day doesn't matter. Consistency over weeks does.
