شیفت شب

“People often ask me how I can work all night,” says Zahra, 31, a nurse at a children's hospital in Shiraz. “The truth is, the night shift is when children need us most.”

Zahra's shift starts at 7 p.m. First, she meets the day nurses, who tell her about each patient: who has a fever, who needs medicine, who is going home tomorrow. “That meeting is the most important twenty minutes of the night,” she explains.

Then she walks around the ward, checking temperatures and giving medicine. Around 10 p.m., most of the children fall asleep, but the work doesn't stop. She writes reports, answers worried parents' questions and prepares for the next day.

The hardest time is usually between 2 and 4 a.m. “That's when you feel really tired. I drink a lot of tea!” she laughs. Emergencies can happen at any time, so she has to stay alert.

At 7 a.m., she hands over to the morning team and goes home. She sleeps until early afternoon, then spends time with her family before the next shift.

Is it worth it? “Absolutely,” Zahra says. “When a child who arrived very sick leaves the hospital smiling, I forget how tired I am.”
