The Wrong Train

Kamran had been planning the trip for weeks. He was going to meet his future in-laws in Tabriz for the first time, and he wanted everything to be perfect. He had bought a new shirt, a box of the best sweets in Tehran, and a train ticket for the 8:15 overnight train.

He arrived at the station just in time, found a train on platform 3 and jumped on. He was so tired that he fell asleep almost immediately.

When he woke up, the sun was rising. Through the window he could see palm trees. Strange, he thought. I didn't know there were palm trees near Tabriz. An old man was sitting opposite him, drinking tea.

“Excuse me,” Kamran asked, “how long until Tabriz?”

The old man laughed so hard that he nearly dropped his glass. “Tabriz? My son, this train is going to Ahvaz!”

Kamran had got on the wrong train. The train to Tabriz had been on platform 4.

He called his fiancée, Mina, expecting her to be angry. Instead, she couldn't stop laughing. When he finally arrived in Tabriz — a day late, with melted sweets and a very creased shirt — her whole family was waiting at the station. Her grandmother hugged him and said, “Anyone who travels to the wrong end of Iran to meet us is welcome in this family.”

Mina's family still tells the story at every wedding.
