The Lost Wallet

It was a cold evening in December. Ali, a sixteen-year-old student, was walking home from his English class when he saw something on the ground near the bus stop. It was a brown leather wallet.

He picked it up and looked inside. There was an ID card, two bank cards and a lot of money — more than his father earned in a month. For a moment, Ali didn't know what to do. Nobody was watching. He could keep it, and no one would ever know.

But then he looked at the ID card. The owner was an old man called Hossein Moradi, and the address was only two streets away. Ali thought about his grandfather and imagined how worried the old man must be.

Ten minutes later, he knocked on the door. An elderly man opened it. His eyes were red; he had clearly been crying. When he saw the wallet, he couldn't speak. “That money,” he finally said, “is for my granddaughter's operation.”

Mr Moradi tried to give Ali some money as a reward, but Ali refused. A week later, a letter arrived at Ali's school. Mr Moradi had written to the head teacher about the honest student — and offered to pay for Ali's English classes for a whole year.
