علم چطور کار می‌کند؛ در یک پاراگراف

A scientist notices something strange and suggests a hypothesis: maybe this plant grows faster in blue light. She carries out an experiment in her lab, growing plants under different colours of light and collecting data. If the results support her idea, and other researchers get the same results, the idea becomes part of a theory. More evidence makes the theory stronger — but in science, very little is ever proved forever.

(دانشمندی چیز عجیبی می‌بیند و فرضیه‌ای مطرح می‌کند؛ مثلاً شاید این گیاه در نور آبی سریع‌تر رشد کند. در آزمایشگاه آزمایشی انجام می‌دهد و داده جمع می‌کند. اگر نتایج از ایده‌اش حمایت کند و پژوهشگرهای دیگر هم به همان نتایج برسند، ایده بخشی از یک نظریه می‌شود. شواهد بیشتر نظریه را محکم‌تر می‌کند؛ اما در علم تقریباً هیچ چیزی برای همیشه «اثبات» نمی‌شود.)

کلمه‌های غیرقابل‌شمارش

research، evidence، information، advice غیرقابل‌شمارش‌اند: a lot of research، some evidence. هیچ‌وقت researches یا evidences نگویید. یکی لازم دارید؟ a piece of evidence، a study، a research project.

data از نظر فنی جمع است (the data are…)، اما امروزه بیشتر آدم‌ها می‌گویند the data is… و هر دو پذیرفته است.

فعل‌هایی که با اسم‌های علمی می‌آیند

پژوهش را do هم می‌کنیم، ولی هیچ‌وقت make research؛ یک اشتباه خیلی رایج که از «تحقیق کردن» فارسی می‌آید.

discover یا invent؟

چیزی را که از قبل وجود داشته discover می‌کنید (پنی‌سیلین، یک سیاره‌ی جدید). چیز تازه‌ای را invent می‌کنید (تلفن). درس بعد بیشتر درباره‌اش است.
