Never too late: my English journey
Two years ago, at the age of 40, I couldn't order a coffee in English. Today I've just finished my first online course taught completely in English. I'm writing this post for anyone who thinks they're “too old” to learn a language.
Honestly, the beginning was embarrassing. I was the oldest person in my class by fifteen years, and I felt nervous every time I had to speak. My pronunciation was terrible, and I kept mixing up “he” and “she”. More than once, I thought about giving up.
What changed? First, I stopped comparing myself to the young students. They learn fast, but I have other advantages: patience, discipline and a clear reason to learn — I wanted to help my daughter, who is studying abroad. Second, I made English part of my daily life. I switched my phone to English, listened to podcasts while cooking and read short news articles every morning.
The biggest lesson? Mistakes are not failures. My teacher told me, “Every mistake is proof that you're trying.” That sentence changed everything for me.
My advice to other adult learners: be patient, find your own reason, and practise a little every day rather than a lot once a week. And laugh at yourself — it helps!

جوابها
- 40.
- Embarrassed and nervous — she was much older than the others and made mistakes. (خجالتزده و مضطرب؛ خیلی از بقیه بزرگتر بود و اشتباه میکرد.)
- Patience, discipline and a clear reason to learn. (صبر، انضباط و یک دلیل روشن)
- To help her daughter, who is studying abroad.
- Any two: phone in English, podcasts while cooking, reading news articles.
- It helped her see mistakes as proof of trying, not failure. (کمک کرد اشتباه را نشانهی تلاش ببیند، نه شکست.)
